As the sun rose on the final day of the Flor de Caña Sustainable Cocktail Challenge, excitement buzzed through our group as we boarded the bus to Granada, Nicaragua. Our journey was more than just a trip through beautiful landscapes; it was a passage through time, steeped in the rich history of this vibrant region.
A Journey Through History
Our guide, Raymundo, captivated us with a fascinating history lesson en route. We learned about William Walker from Nashville, Tennessee, who was the last pirate of Granada, serving as its self-proclaimed president for two tumultuous years before being ousted by the united local forces.

The history of the region is as vast as its landscape, with Lake Nicaragua sprawling over 8,400 km² and the country boasting 24 volcanoes. An intriguing tidbit revealed why Nicaragua lacks a canal: a fateful stamp depicting a volcanic eruption deterred the U.S. Congress from pursuing a canal here, leading them to purchase rights from France in Panama instead.

Raymundo also shared the legacy of the Pellas family, who established a vital trade route during the Gold Rush, connecting New Orleans to San Francisco via Nicaragua—a journey that took just 30 days compared to the perilous six-month alternatives. When the U.S. railways emerged, the Pellas family pivoted their venture into founding the Flor de Caña rum distillery, transforming Nicaragua’s economy.
Granada itself, the first city founded in Nicaragua and the oldest in the Americas that has never been relocated, added a layer of historical significance to our adventure.
Arrival at Isletas
Upon reaching the docks, we were whisked away by boat to the Pellas family’s private island, where the final competition awaited. The island greeted us with a vibrant welcome: a troupe of dancers, a lively band, and Ronny the Peacock, whose audacious calls set the festive tone. As we walked through lush pathways, we marveled at the sight of majestic albino peacocks, hens, and adorable chicks, adding a touch of nature’s elegance to the scene.

The island offered a haven of relaxation with its stunning views, a sumptuous spread of food, and inviting poolside ambiance. Meanwhile, the atmosphere simmered with anticipation as the final three competitors prepared for their ultimate showdown.
The Grand Finale
The culmination of the competition was nothing short of spectacular. Each of the finalists brought their A-game, dazzling us with their expertly crafted cocktails and captivating storytelling. Ultimately, it was Jared Schmidt from Canada who emerged victorious, his concoction resonating with both judges and spectators alike.

Celebrations in Managua
Following the announcement, we regrouped for a jubilant return to Managua, where an evening of dining and dancing awaited us. The camaraderie and shared experiences of the past days made the celebration all the more special.

This incredible journey through Nicaragua and the Flor de Caña Sustainable Cocktail Challenge has been a truly inspiring experience. The dedication to sustainability, the rich cultural tapestry, and the spirit of innovation have left a lasting impression on all of us. As we clinked glasses one last time, we did so with hearts full of gratitude and anticipation for the future. Until next year… cheers!
